Chief Justice: Three judiciary vacancies remain

by Quinton Alomp – EM TV, Port Moresby

Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia said the judiciary will soon announce the appointment of a new judge to the National and Supreme Bench.

Currently, there are four vacancies within the bench this year.

According to the Chief Justice, one has already been appointed and an announcement will be made soon. His identity was not revealed. This will lower the vacancies to only three positions.

“He’s a very senior judge, a retired judge from Australia,” the Chief Justice said.

Sir Salamo said the new judge was a former Chief Justice for one of the states in Australia, and will be based in Kokopo.

Since 2008, the Judiciary branch has been expanding to provinces to give legal access to people.

This year, there will be no higher or lower court branches opened, but the judiciary is planning to open the Northern branch next year, with consideration for West Sepik, Western and Manus provinces on the agenda.
