by Michelle Amba – EM TV, Port Moresby

The NCDC Enforcement Unit will continue to carry out their roles and responsibilities however under a different name, Urban Safety Division.

Deputy City Manager, Honk Kiap, when officially handing over the uniform called for co-operation from the Police hierarchy.

Mr Kiap said to date it is still not clear why the NCDC reservists unit was disbanded however that decision is accepted and the unit will move ahead as a civilian unit putting into use the training received from the police department.

The NCDC Urban Safety Unit will continue to maintain law and order in the city but only to an extent, they will not be able to exercise the powers of a commissioned police officer.

Therefore, he is asking for corporation from hierarchy in the NCD command to have an understanding with the Urban Safety Unit.

Meanwhile, Mr.Kiap said the public is still waiting for the findings into the Hanuabada killings, and silence is just deafening for relatives of those killed and the public in general. He also made reference to the Moana Pisimi case in Lae.

He said the Urban Safety Unit will perform its duties without fear or favour and asked for police assistance in their operations.

The unit will not use firearms as all these were returned to the police department when it was disbanded.

The unit will continue to enforce the Buai ban in the city.
