NCD Police Need More Trained Dogs

By Quinton Alomp, EM TV – Port Moresby

Thousands of people are expected to attend the Pacific Games set for July, and local police have already made predictions of how many people will grace the shores of our nation’s capital.

But with limited police manpower, the NCD Dog Unit Commander, Leuth Nidung said trained police dogs can be an option in controlling movement of people.

The dogs are trained to world standards and are capable in controlling crowds of people, search for stolen properties, missing people and other general duties.

“We have 16 dogs currently in our camp,” the Dog Commander said.

Only one sniffer dog in Bomana dog unit is trained specifically to carry out tasks in detecting firearms and explosives.

About three others are trained to detect drugs, especially marijuana.

But as Pacific Games draws near, Commander Nidung is confident with his team to give their best in providing security for the games.

They will need an additional 15 more dogs to help in crowd control and any threats of explosives and firearms.

So far the Dog Unit performance in NCD has been commendable. The assistance given by the dogs are remarkable. But the Unit is in dire need of new dogs to replace the aging ones.

The challenge is now on the Police Department and the Government to buy more dogs overseas.

A fully vaccinated German-shepherd pup in Australia costs nearly K20, 000.
