NCD And Central Police Commands To Launch Strategic Plan To Decentralize

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A Strategic Plan to decentralise police services within the National Capital District and Central commands will be launched in January 2016.

NCD and Central Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner, Sylvester Kalaut, says the plan will complement the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary’s Bi-Annual plan to improve police services in the country.

The bi-annual plan was launched during the Commissioners’ conference in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

This Strategic Plan will focus on routine duties and responsibilities on the different areas of operations.

Commander Kalaut said the plan will be an important tool for Police in NCD to utilize and be part of the government plans for developments within the different electorates.

“The Gordons, Waigani and Badilli stations have been selected to operate as provincial police stations under this plan, this follows the Police Commissioner’s intention to decentralize police services in the city, Commander Kalaut said.

This will see the inclusion of criminal investigation division, traffic and prosecution departments at these stations.

Last week, the Badilli Station was officially launched as the Mega station for Moresby South Electorate.

Its refurbishment included two-story units for police officers and a recreational area.

Badilli’s facelift comes at a time the constabulary is facing serious challenges on limited police resource.

It is a boost for police personnel at Badilli and a challenge for Moresby North East and North West leaders to also invest in the Strategic plan through their mega stations.

Come January 2016, the ranks of police station commanders at these mega stations will be upgraded to Superintendent and other suburban stations upgraded to Chief Inspector.
