The people of Porgera now have a new health centre, a joint initiative by the Porgera Development Authority, United Church PNG, and the Enga Provincial Government.
The new health centre is at Pakean Camp, Mungulep, a village within the Special Mining Lease, a kilometer away from the Porgera mine.
The Health Centre will be run by the United Church of PNG, and medicine will be supplied by the Department of Health through the Porgera District Health Services.
The agreement between the three parties was signed recently at Mungulep. UCPNG Reverend Bishop, Wai Tege of Ela Region, said the UCPNG had a lot of health and education services in PNG but this was the first one for the people of Porgera valley.
Porgera District health Officer In charge, Jerry Maku said the Porgera district had a population boom due to the cash flow from the mining and such health service was urgently needed.
The ceremony was witnessed by district health workers, mine employees, public servants, Christians from the UCPNG and over 2,000 people from the nearby communities of Mungulep.
