Morrison Reveals Contrary Reports

Australian Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison released a press statement yesterday highlighting contrary reports relating to incidents on February 17th at the Regional Processing Centre on Manus Island.

Minister Morrison said this has cast doubt on the initial advice that the deceased man sustained his injuries outside the centre.

He says, the precise nature of these events is the subject of review and police investigation.

Morrison added that, this is the most effective way to ensure the security of these facilities and safety of all who are accommodated and work within the centre.

He says, in a situation where transferees engage in riotous and aggressive behaviour within the centre, this will escalate the risk to those who engage in such behaviour. However, in such circumstances service providers must conduct themselves lawfully and consistent with the service standards set out in their contract.

Police investigation will look at the conduct of service providers present that evening, including persons within the compound that night.
