Morobe Pilots Domestic Violence Awareness

Morobe Province is to pilot a Red Cross sponsored project to create awareness on social hardships confronting communities.

The community has taken an initiative to bring to light and to talk about it publiclythe problems faced by Papua New Guinearsquo;s societies.

Today, yet anther ofthe anti-violence campaign will seek to find collective integrated approach to put an end to all forms of violence inthe second largest city.

Secretary General for Red CrosPNG Esmie Sinape says Lae city is prone to a host of law and order problems. Known for its ethnic clashes and high crime rate,the city is chosen to hostthe pilot project for the Red Cross roll out program.

Two weeks ago Morobe women conducted a sit-in-strike wherethey presented a petition tothe national government afterthe rape of a female nurse that triggeredthe closure ofthe city’s hospital.

Morobe’s law and order chairman Peter Namus saysthe part forward in addressing this problem rests on community cooperation with various government bodies and ther stake holders.

While few ofthese problems are being caught inthe lime lightomany more aren’t being reported.

These has also been a long standing threat to Lae asthe industrial hap forPNG rsquo;s economic development and that is one ofthe main concerns ofthe Red CrosPNG.

The campaign is expected to expand to ther parts of Papua New Guineafeatured prominently with high rate of crime and violence.

Bet asthe awareness campaign is set to roll, members ofthe Red Cross say it wasn’tthe first and it won’t bethe last of this anti-violence campaign.

They’re calling for more support fromthe Government and ther stake holders to work togther and end all forms of violence inthe communities.
