More Complaints Emerging Over Rogue Policemen in NCD

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

More complaints are emerging from residents of the National Capital District, on the behaviour of rogue police personnel.

Today, vendors from the Gordon’s Informal Sector Women’s Association said many of them have fallen victim to police assault at the temporary Unagi bus stop.

President of the association, Sana Dokapa, said on many occasions abusive language was used against them.

“Police officers should take us to police stations and charge us with the right charges; instead they check our wallets and even get our monies”, said Sana.

Other vendors claim these assaults include the confiscation of their goods, and the search of their belongings.

They said police go to the extreme of destroying their tables and smashing their goods.

Over the weekend a group of vendors at Four Mile were also assaulted by police.

They said at least K70 was removed from them and they were taken to the Boroko Police Station, without any proper charges.

However, when EM TV News contacted the officer attending to complaints on Saturday, he confirmed that there were no official reports or complaints about the assault made at the police station.

Meanwhile, an official comment from the police hierarchy cannot be made on the assault by NCD police.

This comes as NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Andy Bawa, said there were no registered reports at any stations in the city.

In an earlier interview with EM TV News, Bawa had advised NCD residents to report such cases at their local police stations, so appropriate disciplinary action can be taken against those responsible.
