Mioks Triumph Over Muruks

Enga Mioks recorded a convincing win over cellar dwellers Mendi Muruks 28 points to 12 in yesterday’s Digicel cup match in Lae.

The Engan boys proved their worth by scoring five tries to Muruks’ two tries to cling to the third spot.

Both teams were comprised of young and raw talented players, however strength and fitness have been the determining factors during the 80 minutes of the game.

The Engan franchise were the first to score with centre Ryan Yamakiso scoring back to back tries to put his team ahead with a 12 nil lead.

Muruks half-back and captain Joshua Molsie scored under the uprights in the 39th minute for his team to trail 12points to 6 into the halftime.

Minutes into the second half, Muruks scored twenty meters in from the touch to level the score at 12all.

The Mioks, coached by Timothy Lepa, retaliated with centre Charlie Martin running through the Muruks’ right flank to score far out, but the conversion was unsuccessful.

A vocal Mioks side gave the visitors intense pressure as they struggled to execute their game plans forcing many ball handling errors.

Minutes later Randy Joseph ran in another try for the Mioks to comfortably lead 22 points to 12.

With 10 minutes remaining in the second half, the lighter Muruks side couldn’t stop the rampaging Mioks attack as BJ Warren bulldozed through and grounded the ball behind the uprights.

Charlie Simon converted four from five for his team to win 28 points to 12 at fulltime.

In the earlier match, competition leaders Lae SNAX Tigers were defeated 26 points to 20 by defending champions SNS Port Moresby Vipers.

This also broke the Tigers’ unbeaten record in the competition this year.

Meanwhile, the Mioks will host the Vipers this sunday in Lae while the Tigers take a bus ride to Rabiamul oval to play the Mt Hagen Eagles.
