May 8th: Waigani Hostel Eviction Case

The National Court today set the date, 8th of May 2014, as the trial date for the North Waigani Hostel case.

More than 1 hundred evicted public servants have taken the National Housing Corporation to court, over their eviction.

In February last year, hundreds of people were evicted from the then NHC North Waignai hostel, despite a 2010 court order in place, restraining that eviction.

NHC sought an ex-parte order, and acting upon that order, evicted the North Waigani tenants.

In November last year, the National Court reinstated the earlier order of 2010, which meant that the eviction conducted was illegal. The plaintiffs will be represented by the Public Solicitor in the full–day trial.

Since the eviction, all plaintiffs are now scattered throughout Port Moresby and the country.

Lead plaintiff, Rex Welin is calling on all plaintiffs scattered throughout the country, to take note of the trial date.
