Pacific Island Forum leaders are being urged to take concrete action on improving maternal, new born and child health (MNCH) throughout the Pacific region.

World Vision’s Pacific Timor-Leste branch made the call for a roadmap to be created to achieve such action.

The proposed roadmap would effectively assist in dealing with MNCH at the regional level.

MNCH is one of the many health challenges facing women throughout the Pacific.

Though not included in the priority areas of discussion in this year’s forum, World Vision are calling on Pacific Island Forum leaders to make it a priority.

While acknowledging the efforts of governments throughout the region in addressing this issue, Policy and Advocacy Manager, Nancy Waites, stressed the need for a more regional approach.

She says a roadmap for MNCH is ceratinly a way forward and a step in the right direction. This would allow Pacific island countries to learn from each other in dealing with MNCH.

World Vision, through its various programs throughout the Pacific, is working on improving the wellbeing of mothers and their children.

However, they say more must be done to reduce the number of maternal and child mortality rates.
