Many Challenges for New Jiwaka Day High School

By Michelle Amba – EM TV News, Port Moresby

As the grade ten national exams near, one school in the new Jiwaka Province is still without basic necessities, like a science laboratory.

The Jiwaka Lutheran Day School does not have a library or even a Home Economics building.

However, Head Teacher, Terrence Tai, told EMTV News that he is confident the pioneer grade tens will deliver good results for the new school.

The school is sitting on land allocated to the Lutheran Church, but is still in need of more like an administration block and teacher’s houses.

The school is yet to receive the Tuition Fee Free Subsidy since it opened last year. The only financial support the school receives is from the Jiwaka Provincial Government.

The Day High School has four grade nine classes and four grade ten classes.

It has 11 positions for teachers, however only ten have been filled.

None of the teachers have accommodation and are currently living in the village.

The school spends close to 30,000 kina each year to rent houses for teaching staff.
