Madang public get awareness on fire

by Rachel Shisei – EM TV News, Madang

The Madang Fire Service took the initiative to carry out a public awareness campaign today, to inform the people about fire safety, especially with the drought season at hand.

The awareness included a display which involved a live fire explosion which was then extinguished by the firemen, under the watchful eyes of the public.

The drama was to illustrate to the public how fast a fire spreads, especially when everything is very dry as a result of the drought season.

The public who were present confirmed that the drought is already affecting their water sources.

They are resorting to travelling long distances for water, while others look for relatives who have access to water supplies.

Clement Wane, a sub-officer of the Madang Fire Service Department, said that people have to be very careful of how they handle candles, matches and the like, because a simple fire may spread to something even more serious.

Members of the public say that they appreciate the awareness by the Madang Fire Service, but are curious to know more about the drought, since it is also affecting the province severely.
