Long Wait Over: BSP Reaches Rural Wapenamanda

by Quinton Alomp – EM  TV News, Port Moresby

A 25 year old man’s ten year wait to open a bank account is finally over.

Fidelis Sauping, is a person living with disability in the Tsak valley of Wapenamanda, Enga province.

Fidelis was among hundreds of people who opened a bank account at Tsak valley high school on Thursday.

With his disability, being grounded on a wheelchair, access to infrastructure and banking services was slim.

He was among thousands of people in rural PNG who have yet to open a bank account.

For ten years fidelis was thinking of opening an account with Bank South Pacific.

Earlier this year he travelled to Wabag to open an account but all his attempts have failed.

However, he was one of the first to open a personal account with BSP on Thursday.

Bank of PNG deputy governor, Benny Popoitai, said many people in rural areas are not part of the formal banking system.
