Llyod Robson Oval challenges Sir John Guise Stadium as Home of Rugby League

by Skola Sengi – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

After the events of the Intercity Cup grand final, the National Government, in partnership with Oil Search Limited, are looking to rebuild the reputation of Lloyd Robson Oval.

On Saturday, a Queensland Rugby League match official invited to officiate the match between the Agmark Gurias and TNA Lions was assaulted after the game.

This has led some to question the integrity of the competition in staging the future finals matches at venues like the Sir John Guise Stadium.

Although the stadium meets spectator numbers, crowd behaviour has painted a negative image on rugby league.

However, Lloyd Robson Oval remain as the home of rugby league in the country.

Renovations on the oval have already begun and once complete, will cater for the Intercity Cup, Port Moresby Rugby League competition, and other rugby league tournaments.

Lloyd Robson Oval is now 80 % complete.

In a press conference yesterday, Minster for Sports, Justin Tkatcheno said, “this is a great project with Oil search under a Trustee.

“The Trustee looks after this particular project which is Oil Search and Port Moresby Rugby League.”

He added that “The PRL Board members are on the board of Trustee with Oil Search because they are the ones that are funding the project. And now managing it on behalf of PRL. This is to ensure that the mistakes of the past never rear their ugly heads again.”
