Lihir MOA review unsuccessful

The meeting scheduled for this week in Kavieng was attended by a team from port Moresby and provincial government.

The review ofthe revised Lihir Mining Project Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) did not take place due to non-attendance by two parties.

 

The Lihir Mine AreaLandowners Association andthe Nimamar Local Level Government were absent due to internal issues.

 

Two ther parties includingthe State andthe New Ireland Provincial Government met and discussed a number of issues.

 

Giventhe situation that two parties were absentthe ther two met and reached an understanding on a number of issues as way forward towards conductingthe review proper when all parties meet.

 

The state’s team leader saidthe issues discussed included rates of royalties andthe special support grants.

 

It was also acknowledged thatthe provincial government needed to improver mechanisms for expenditure for these funds. It was also discussed that New Crest Mining should be a party tothe MOA.

 

Meanwhilethe government will continue dialogue withthe two landowner groups withthe view to resolvingtheir issues.
