Concerned members of the legal fraternity in the country had a sit in protest today to condemn the actions of the sitting Member for Vanimo Green, Belden Namah in storming the Court House last week, to arrest the Chief Justice.
A petition containing a total of hundred and twenty-nine signatures of lawyers was read out before giving it to the Chief Secretary, Theo Zurenuoc.
Although the turn up by the lawyers was less than a hundred, and mostly from junior lawyers, the significance of the protest was felt.
The walk took place from the National Archives to the National Court at Waigani, with the lawyers all fully robed, signifying the nobility of the profession.
Inside the Court premises lawyers took the opportunity to air their views on the abuse of the judiciary by Mr Belden Namah.
One senior lawyer described the actions of Mr Namah as that of dictators like Idi Amin and Adolf Hitler.
Another senior lawyer, Moses Murray, a candidate also for East Sepik Regional shared his experience of the importance of upholding the constitution and of the shameful action of Mr Namah.
For the legal professionals it was a personal attack to them and the job they love to do.
To end their sit in protest, they read their petition out to the media present, with the expectations of getting a response from the country’s Prime Minister.
