Lakwaharu-Keleone: The New Team for the Ipatas Cup

Lakwaharu Keleone is the latest team to lock horns in the Southern leg of the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup.

The Tubuseria-based team has a combination of players from different sporting backgrounds as they hope for a gold pass.

It will be a double celebration for the newly-registered Keleone League with PNGRFL to join forces with the new team for the Ipatas Cup.

With the successful conclusion of the Northern Leg, the Ipatas Cup competition now looks south but they are hard-pressed to go past the new recruit, The Lakwaharu- Keleone.

Made up of experience and new guns, they will give the other 11 competing teams a run for their money.

Players were selected from last year’s Lakwaharu 9s tournament and Aroma Coast Rugby League tournament.

The two leagues, Lakwaharu and newly-registered Keleone Rugby League from Aroma Coast, joined forces, ready to lock horns with the old guns in the competition.

Interestingly, the team has a combination of players also playing in other sporting codes. Former PNG Pukpuks speedster, Kojo Ware was scouted for the team.

Ware brought the Viriolo Sharks home winners at the recent Aroma Coast 7s tournament. His speed will apparently be utilized in both corridors on the field.

A 30-man squad has been named and is currently under training.

In the meantime, Keleone Rugby League is officially now a registered league under the PNG Rugby Football League. It brings the total up to 16 leagues in the Central province and 26 in the Southern region.

A new rugby field is under construction at the Aroma Coast and will become the home of the Keleone Rugby League.
