Lae Vendors Say Give Opportunities Before Banning Street Sales

by Bethanie Harriman – EM TV News, Lae

Lae’s economic growth as the industrial hub has created opportunities for those who work for companies and those who choose to sell products on the streets.

Street vendors have in the last ten years increased in Lae with it pickpocketing and bag snatching and the vendor have been blamed for the petty crimes.

“We get blamed for the petty crimes happening in Eriku and Market, when we are trying to make an income,” said Town Vendor Andrew Mon.

Lae Authorities are taking action, it’s been reported that they will removed street vendors.

But those who are selling products on the streets are calling for more opportunities to be given to them before they are kicked out.

The vendors are mainly youths who dropped out from school somewhere around the country and end up in Lae looking for an opportunity.

Their story is the same, selling electronic goods on the streets puts a little income in their pockets to keep them from starvation.
