Kutubu Floods

President of Kutubu Local Level Government, John Kila, has brought to light his people’s concerns following the continuous flooding in the province.

Mr Kila said currently, the people’s food gardens have been destroyed and especially, sago, which is the people’s staple food, has been inundated, making it difficult for them to survive.

With the Provincial government’s relief assistance of K500, 000, last week, Mr Kila wants Kutubu to be considered as well.

These pictures were taken by the Kutubu LLG President. It shows the devastation caused after two weeks of continuous rain, which resulted in heavy flooding, and houses and food gardens were inundated.

Mr Kila said there are 25, 000, people in the Kutubu area. Of these 10, 000 are Fasu people, who rely heavily on sago as their staple food, however, that is underwater due to the continuous flooding. They are now forced to reside with relatives to fend for themselves.

Mr Kila confirmed that a Team from the Provincial Disaster Office visited the affected areas to assess the situation recently.

Last week, Southern Highlands Governor, William Powi, also announced a relief assistance of K500, 000, to help people in the affected areas of Southern Highlands Province, where priority will be to clear all access roads that are affected.
