Kuman Explains Exit of Exams

by Fabian Hakalits – EM TV News, Goroka

National Education Minister, Nick Kuman, was in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province during the Goroka Grammar School Graduation last Thursday.

That is where he explained the exit of National Examinations for grades 8 and 10.

While welcoming critics on the decision to out-phase these examinations, Mr Kuman said National Government’s decision, to out-phase grade eight and ten examination’s remains.

One of the identified key issues for this exit is to help address unemployment problems in Papua New Guinea.  However, with proper analysis, the exit is a complete structure of education reforms in the country.

“PNG must have its own system that will determine its future,” he said.

Mr Kuman said high number of grade 8 and 10 school leavers, are unemployed, which some end up in criminal activities.

“Many of them are unemployed.  Grade 12 is a requirement for employment,” he said

By 2022, the minimum education level is grade 12.

Mr Kuman says, this was a critical decision, a National Government’s challenge, to increase capacity.

“Capacity like teachers incentives, resources is what we will invest in,” said Mr Kuman.
