The Komo Airfield Landowners Association (KALA) is calling on the government to establish a new agreement for the current development of the airfield.
They say over 300,000 people will miss out on community projects or spinoff benefits if this is not considered. They say the government must hear the plight of the locals since no formal agreement was signed for the extension of the Komo airfield.
The landowners welcome the extension and development of the Komo airfield, but say locals must be part of it. They say the Komo airfield consists of 70 major clans in block 1,787; a total area of 500 hectares.
KALA leaders say the 70 clans of Komo have integrated landowner groups, but the government must show interest in involving them since they have given their hunting and gardening grounds for development.
They have addressed letters to the National Airports Corporation, CASA, ExxonMobil, Prime Minister Peter O&rsquO’Neill and the Hela provincial government for a new MOU signing.
Their comments come after a MOU was signed by Civil Aviation Minister Davies Steven and ExxonMobil Managing Director Andrew Barry for the commercialisation of the Komo airfield earlier this month.
