Kokopo Athletics Championships winds down

AthleticPNG is inthe process of finalising its team for the Mini Pacific Games in Wallis and Futuna followingthe successful staging ofthe championships in Kokopo.

A total of 324 athletes participated inthe Championships in various age divisions from under-14 to open division at Ulapia, East New Beitain Province.

 

Throughthe Go for Gold programme, AthleticPNG was able to ensure that financial difficulties did not prevent any squad member from making it tothe championships.

 

Highlight ofthe Championships wasthe Men’s 100 meter eventowon by Kupuni Wisil clocking a time of 10.83 seconds from Nazmie Lee Marai’s (10.87) Theo Piniau’s (10.91) and Junior Avefa’s (10.94).

 

Helen Philemon wonthe women’s 100m in 12.51seconds with Adrine Monagi running a personal best 12.59’s econds to edge out Venessa Waro (12.61) second.

 

The womens 200m was also a very close race with Betty Berua just edging out Venessa Waro with a much improverd Shirley Vunatup coming in at third place.

 

Berua also wonthe 400m in 57.73 seconds with Vunatup running a huge personal best of 58.21 seconds and  Pauline Kupai third in 59.36.

 

 

The next major event for AthleticPNG will bethe Milo sponsored Southern Region Championships in Port Moresby onthe 24th of August.
