Kokoda Victims Absent

By Eric Haurupma – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A defendant allegedly involved in an incident along the Kokoda Track earlier this year, which drew widespread international coverage, appeared before the Waigani Committal Court in Port Moresby today.

19-year-old Toksey Jacob, and an alleged 17-year-old accomplice were apprehended, arrested and charged by police on January 15 for allegedly wounding Brit’sh trekker Matthew Iovane, and raping his female companion Michelle Clemens.

Both defendants are currently in police custody awaiting a verdict, however the 17-year-old defendant appeared for mention in the Juvenile Court.

It was alleged that on January 12 this year, defendants Toksey Jacob and an accomplice wounded the fingers of Matthew Iovane, and raped American, Michele Clemens, near Efogi village along the Kokoda Track.

Medical reports provided by Dr. Robin Sios of Paradise Private Hospital detected evidence that the victim had been sexually penetrated 24 hours before the incident, but there was no clinical evidence of rape.

Today, the police prosecutor sought an adjournment in court on circumstances that the victims are out of the country, thus giving them time to submit their evidence.

Meanwhile, the defendants will be held in custody while the case is adjourned to June 23, 2016.
