Jetty for Umboi Islanders in Morobe

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Umboi Island, in the Morobe Province, is now the proud owner of a new Jetty, designed and constructed by Nawae Construction Ltd.

The Gasam Jetty is one of three jetties that Nawae Construction Ltd has been awarded the contract to build by the Office of Coastal Fisheries Development Agency.

The contract, which was signed in November 2014, involved the design and construction of 3 concrete jetties in the Morobe Province. Wasu Jetty and Kanzarua Jetty, both located along the coastline of Morobe and have also been completed.

The 200 metre long jetty is founded on steel piles driven into the sea bed and encased in concrete.

General Manager Projects and Compliance, Adam Hay, said the reason why construction was completed so quickly is due to all the concrete elements being pre-fabricated at the company Precast Concrete Facility in Lae, MP.

Mr Hay said, all precast concrete were produced under strict quality control and testing done by the company’s externally accredited material testing laboratory, also in Lae.

“Also the less time on site, and less construction and concreting being done on site means there is a smaller environmental impact,” he said.
