An infant is among three children and five adults who were rescued after six days drifting out in open seas off Gulf province.

The baby was one month and three weeks old. Parents, Abel and Bernadette Diani, said the six days and five nights were very tough for them. Abel is the health inspector for South Fly electorate, and his wife who hails from East Sepik province, is a nursing officer.

“It’s very hard with no water and food,” Bernadette said.

The nine survivors departed Baimuru in Gulf province early this week for Daru in Western province but the dinghy they are on encountered engine failure. They drifted for nearly a week after being discovered by OK Tedi’s shipping vessel, MV Fly Prosperity.

They were brought in to Port Moresby yesterday afternoon. They are now undergoing medical checks and were under the protection of the National Disaster Centre.

A management representative from MV Fly Prosperity, Captain TP Singh said the nine were part of a group that were rescued by another OK Tedi ship, MV Fly Alliance and brought in to Port Moresby on Tuesday.

National Disaster Centre Assistant Director Operations, Andrew Oaego said his office will be taking care of them until they are repatriated back to Daru.
