Independence: Lae celebrate, and so does remote Yalumet in Kabwum District

A slow start to independence celebrations in Lae.

Heavy rains delayed the flag raising ceremony, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of those who made an effort to turn up.

Military personal and police commenced the day with formalities.

Meanwhile, people in Yalumet in the Kabwum District,  also celebrated independence day in much the same way as they have for the last four decades.

Yalumet, is located in a coffee growing region of Morobe but remains without road access after 41 years.

Today, a small group of villagers gathered with provincial law and order officers to mark 41 years of independence.

Yalumet’s isolation has meant that service delivery has been very difficult.

The only other  means of travelling is by  North Coast Aviation, which has weekly flights to the government station.

Today people told of their difficulties and how they have come to accept it as a way of life.
