2015 PNG Independence Fashion

by Serah Aupong – EM TV News, Port Moresby

All over Port Moresby,  residents came out today in a feast of PNG colours.

It was the day for red black and gold and the people of Port Moresby, especially women came out dressed for the occasion. While the men were able to hold their own, the variety of women’s styles, stole the show.

T’shirts, meri blouses, bilums and bilum wears were on show.

Sophie, an Eastern Highlander who grew up in Port Moresby, is recycling a dress that her sister made, combining PNG’s flag colours with a modern twist on the age old skill of bilum making.

Visitors to Port Moresby showed that they are able to be just as patriotic.

Julie and her sister came in from Mt Hagen with meri blouse suits made by Mt Hagen women.

While some people like Julie are conscious about where they bought their outfits, others are not as conscious as counterfit t-shirts, meri blouses and flags flood the city.

Tuma is a vendor who sells all her products of bilums, bilum dresses and caps.

Today, she is happy because her bilums made with PNG flag colours are selling out.

But not everyone was out in favourite colours today, others had specific reasons to wear their provincial colours.

Jenny Kaivepa, a teacher in Port Moresby came out today to showcase East Sepik province.

“I want to be different today because of one man, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare,” she said.
