Hospital Poroman Foundation’s Fight Against Cancer

By Lorraine Genia – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Cancer is a disease that has been named as one of the biggest killers in Papua New Guinea.

The ABC reported in 2012 that breast cancer had increased from affecting 8.49 per cent to 46.5 per cent of the population.

Cervical cancer grew from an already whopping 69.8 per cent to 96.7 per cent, and Oral Cancer from 26.6 per cent to 41.7 per cent.

These rates are per 100,000, for those aged 15-44, between the years 2000-2004.

While the health sector is still addressing the frightening incline in these statistics, there is a group of people in Papua New Guinea and abroad who have committed to assisting the Hospital Poroman Foundation in their fight against cancer.

Well renowned PNG musicians Adrian Gedisa and Radley Lavaimat represent the Foundation as ambassadors, alongside Australian Wallabies Halfback and Papua New Guinean born Will Genia, who leads the campaign with the backing of home grown talent in the likes of Billy Torea, Manu Guise and Titi Gigimat.

The campaign will be officially launched in Port Moresby this evening, while the event set December 12 will see Papua New Guineans from all walks of life register to shave, trim or dye their hair to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Ward at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
