Hansard Recording System to Help Bougainville Parliament

As part of its peace and good governance building capacity programme, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) has supported in implementing a new gateway to support the Autonomous Bougainville Government improve, enhance and build good governance and transparency in its house of parliament.

With corruption being a primary issue challenging the country, a new recording system was installed at the Bougainville parliament for the house and its representatives to use.

The installation of the new Hansard recording system will help with the recording of all parliament sessions and proceedings.

Now with the recording system available, all Bougainville parliament sessions will be recorded, archived and be made available for the public to use.

This will help the representatives in the house of parliament practice transparency and accountability.

The initiative taken by UNDP and the Autonomous Bougainville Government will also help the government of Papua New Guinea to improve on peace building, enhance community consistency and good governance capacity in various government departments.

When commending UN for its support, Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Simon Pentanu, said the new system will help strengthen accountability and transparency of the Bougainville’s parliament and its representatives.

The successful implementation of the initiative was made possible with support through the UN Peace Building Fund.
