Gurakor Youth and Police Confrontation Resulted in Shoot-Out

by Bethanie Harriman – EM TV, Lae

Another group of eye witnesses of the Gurakor market confrontation, speaking anonymously, claim that youths at the village also shot at police on Saturday.

The group of eyewitnesses are part of a Lae-based company that were transporting cargo up to Bulolo on Saturday.

They say they were parked at the market when the confrontation between youths at Gurakor village and the police happened.

An eyewitness from Gurakor also confirmed on Saturday that there was a confrontation and shots were fired.

According to the eyewitnesses, shots were fired by youths and saw police personnel retreating for cover.

This follows allegations made by the Gurakor people that 50-year-old mother of seven children and several grandchildren, Gedisau Yanan, died from a stray bullet.

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, has called for swift action to be taken by police to investigate the incident.

Provincial Commander, Kaiglo Ambane also personally visited the village on Saturday to assure the people that investigations will be carried out to find the cause of death.

It is understood that a postmortem will be carried out to reveal what caused the death of Gedisau Yanan. Her cause of death is still unknown.

The Bulolo Highway remains opened for public to use.

Bulolo MP, Sam Basil will also address the Gurakor villagers this afternoon.

Also in Mumeng today, Basil and Mumeng LLG President, Okam Paton received a petition from the Zenag people asking for the surrendering of eight suspects.

They are wanted for the Kumalu incident where a man was chopped in the hands and two women were raped during attempts to cross the flooded river.
