Grade Eight Sit for Final Examinations

By Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Last month, the education department announced that Grade Eight students in Papua New Guinea will no longer sit for national examinations, starting next year.

Today, some primary schools are embarking on plans that will guide them to adapt to the new education policy.

Head Teacher of Wardstrip Demonstration School, Emily Viki, said Wardstrip is setting a standard that will accommodate the increase in student enrolment come 2016.

This comes following the department’s move to eliminate both Grade Eight and 10 examinations from the education system.

These changes have been made following the shift in education curriculum from the Outcome Based Education system that will be replaced by the Standard Based Curriculum system.

The education department is setting this new policy aimed at reducing the high number of school drop-outs per year.

However, the government’s free education policy will be attracting an alarming number of new student enrolments.
