Government Withdraws Funding for Village Court Officials in Central Province

By Quinton Alomp – EM TV, Port Moresby

Over 1, 000 village court officials in the Central province will be greatly affected, following the national government’s withdrawal of funds, initially earmarked for the payment of their allowances.

The government allocated K469, 000 annually for their allowances. But this year the provincial government has not received any funding, from the national government.

Central province acting provincial administrator, Edward Kila said this will add an additional financial burden on the provincial government to now allocate funds for the village court sector, in the provincial budget.

Central province has about 1, 050 court officials working in 67 village courts. Court officials include magistrates, peace officers and village court clerks.

Mr Kila announced this when presenting a computer, printer and office accessories to village court officials from the Tolukama Gold Mine area.

The materials were purchased by the Woitape LLG Services Improvement Program Funds.

LG President, Joe Gelu also raised concerns over the reduction of LLG SIP funds from K500, 000, to only K100, 000 this year.

He said this reduced funding will have a big impact on their five year development plan.

Mr Gelu said they will now be forced to reduce funding for various sectors like agriculture and concentrate more on key areas of health and education.
