Government plans to build isolated island prison

The government announced plans to build a private Maximum Security Camp on an isolated island.

Manus Province has put up its hand.

Member for Manus Ronny Knight took interest inthe recent prison breakouts and askedthe prime minister of his plans to build a maximum security camp outside of Port Moresby.

He confidently said his electorate had islands available and was ready to facilitate this plan ifthe government had any.

Prime Minister O’Neill in response saidthe government is looking at addressing a wide range of issues starting from increasingthe number of judges to strenthening police presence in districts.

The idea to have an isolated maximum Security Unit is one oftheir agendas and thanked Mr Knight for willing to facilitate this request.

He said his government will now go into planning and work should begin in 2014.

Prime Minister O’Neill’s plan is to have all high risk prisoners from all parts ofthe country kept on an isolated island where escape would be impossible.

He lashed out at correctional service officers, particularly women who have continuously harbouredthe escape of convicted robber, WilliamKapris.

The proposed Maximum Security Camp, Mr O’Neill says will be tendered and operated privately.
