Government Plans to Abolish All Squatter Settlements

The Government has planned to abolish all squatter settlements throughoutthe country to free up land for development.

 

The Government also plans to mover in on private firms, it’says have cheatedthe system to avoid land rentals and rates.

 

Minister told members that land inthe urban centers have not been developed but occuplied illegally.

 

The government is now inthe process of securingthe land before proper plans are drawn to developthem.

 

“As you would see in Port Moresby and ther centers like Laethere are squatters on state land. They have been on those lands for many years and it’s very difficult to removerthem, but that is not to saythey will remainthere. If a company or and individual applies for that particular land and gets itthenthese people will have to be moverd. So I want to inform all Papua New Guineas who are residing on state land illegally to start preparing to mover out,” said Minister Benny.

 

He said developers interested in developing state land must go throughthe right processes. The minister made special mention ofthe Special Agriculture and Business leases. He said audit is still underway.

 

Minister Allen made parliament aware of his ministry and department’s plans following questions raised by Nothern Governor Garry Juffa on abused processes to acquiring land in his province.

 

Meantime,the minister promised all SABes will be audited by his department.
