German Consul Donates to Women’s Soccer Clubs

by Jeremy Mogi – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

With the old Bisini Grounds making way for a world-class sporting venue used at the recent Pacific Games, football here in the capital has been about as dormant as once-active volcano of late.

But that is soo about to change, with plans afoot for the new season of the men’s and women’s PMSA competitions both to commence in the coming months.

The new season’s official start date is still yet to be locked in, but excitement is already abuzz at two of the women’s clubs thanks to a generous German donation.

Rapatona FC and Mungkuas were recently proud recipients of new equipment thanks to the generosity of the German Consulate here in Papua New Guinea.

While the awarding of balls and other equipment is no doubt a boost, it is the actual support and interest shown in the sport as a whole that has raised optimism. Rapatona FC currently competes in both the PMSA men’s and women’s Super League competitions, and has been competing in the PMSA top tier since 1982.

Even though the name Rapatona is derived from the name of the local level government area of Rapatona in the Manus Province, the club and the people of Rapatona have always welcomed those from around PNG and the Pacific who are serious about developing themselves as both footballers and as people.

he club has also formed a fantastic relationship with Port Moresby International School, with notable players such as Alwin Komolong, Felix Komolong, Rodney Mobiha and Lucy Maino, who all played for PNG at the recent Pacific Games, both members of the club and PMIS alumni.

The other club, Mungkas FC has also had a women’s football program in place for a number of years now, and a successful one it has been. But with the injection of assistance from ther German, football loving Consulate here in the capital, the program has nowhere to go but forward.
