by Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Lae

Director of Lae’s Gentamo Head Start School, Haringa Qureka, says early childhood learning is vital for a child’s academic development.

It comes following yesterday’s independence celebrations at the special education center that saw a range of entertainment take place.

The school’s director also said the school has been pushing to get recognition from the education department.

Gentamo Head Start School in Lae may be small, but has educated more than 200 kindergarten and grades one to four students since 2013.

Amongst these students are children with special needs.

The school has been operating on funds given by students’ parents through school fees.

Qureka says the school has been pushing to receive recognition from the education department in order to receive much needed funding.

Lae District Education Manager. Kaumu Laga, during the event said the students’ presentations have indicated the school has performed to a level slightly higher than any ordinary elementary school.

The school is one amongst a few schools that continue to care for the welfare of children with special needs, as well as early childhood development.
