Honour Funding Commitment for Garaina Road Project, says Basil

By Sylvester Gawi – EM TV, Lae

Bulolo MP, Sam Basil, is now calling on Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, and his provincial administration, to honour their commitment of K3 million, for the Garaina Road Construction Project.

Mr Basil made this call when inspecting the road project site, last week.

The Garaina road is a vital link for the inland people of Bulolo district, which will pave way for government services and supplies into the remote villages.

Once completed, it will connect the people of Biaru, Kasangare and the Garaina station to Wau–Bulolo and Lae City.

“The new cut will link the Owen Stanley Range and link Kunemaipa, and the people will drive all the way to Port Moresby,” says Basil.

They are still waiting for the K3 million PSIP funds committed by the Morobe Provincial Government through the Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, during the Bulolo Councillors Summit, last year.

Bulolo district is also counter funding the project with K2 million.

“We have spent money last year to purchase machines. We’ve got a 20 tonne excavator, a 10 tonne bulldozer, two 6 tonne trucks and we are increasing the fleet this year.”

The only access into Biaru, Kasangare and the Garaina station is by air. The road conditions have become worse, forcing the people to walk for several hours to get to the government station.

The Garaina area has great potential in agriculture; however, no road access and transport difficulties have resulted in produce left to rot villages.

Basil also blamed the Morobe Provincial Administration for awarding contracts to “their cronies”, described as paper contractors, who get paid for carrying out no tangible developments.

Nawaeb MP, Gisuwat Siniwin, made the same call for the governor to honour his commitments.

He wants the governor and the administration to release the K3 million PSIP funds for road projects in the Nawaeb district.
