Ganim Says No

Chairman of the Parliamentary Referral Committee on Education, and Wabag MP, Robert Ganim says there is no need for another public hearing on teachers leave entitlements.

Mr Ganim said his Committee has already investigated the issue, and recommendations will be presented to parliament in this month’s sitting.

He was responding to recent calls by Goroka MP Bire Kimisopa who is the Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Public Sector Reform and Service Delivery to conduct another public enquiry on teachers’ leave entitlements.

Chairman Ganim assured teachers that the issue of leave fares and entitlements has been attended to in detail, and is awaiting parliament’s approval to implement the changes in the system that could provide long term solutions to teacher’s problems in the country.

He reminded the 48,000 teachers that their issues are not overnight problems, so they must understand. As schools have resumed classes, Mr Ganim urged teachers to refrain from taking out industrial actions that could disrupt classes.

Some recommendations put forward by the Parliamentary Referral Committee on Education include the need to review functions of Teaching Service Commission and Education Department.

Review and define teachers’ salaries, allowances and entitlements. As well as the need to review teachers’ appointment process, and decentralise ALESCO pay system to provincial education authorities. Create a leave fare data base. Make Teaching Service Commission as separate entity of State. Review process of retrenchment, retirement and resignation of teachers. Establish a centralised teachers information database and provide manpower and capacity development for teachers.

All these recommendations will be presented by Chairman Ganim in parliament on February 10.
