First Permanent Footbridge for Eliptamin Village

The people of Eliptamin village inthe Telefomin District now have a footbridge after 38 years ofIndependence.

 

Atthe cost of K300, 000,the footbridge isthe first project undertaken bythe Member for Telefomin, Solan Mirisim, with support from Ok Tedi Mining Limited.

The Tol footbridge was officially opened duringtheIndependence week.

 

There was excitement inthe air asthe people welcomed local MP Solan Mirisim, his delegates, and Managing Director for Ok Tedi Mining Limited, Nigel Parker to Eliptamin village.

 

The footbridge was constructed bythe locals with full logistical support from Ok Tedi Mining Limited. 

 

The footbridge here will connect about 17 villages to access few basic services, most of which are only accessible by road and air in this remote part of Telefomin District.

 

Mr. Mirisim, a first time politician, said much ofthe projects he will implement are basic services that have been neglected by past lLeadersofthe district.

 

He saidthe footbridge is onlythe start of a new chapter for the people.

 

Mr. Mirisim also commended Ok Tedi Mining Limited for transporting allthe materials tothe work site. As Eliptamin village is only accessible by air, most ofthe materials were airlifted.

 

He also presented a proposal for a new double classroom and staff house for the primary school to OTML MD Parker.

 

Mr. Parker toldthe people that OTML was ready to assist in bringing tangible development in this remote and isolated community.

 

Theythen launchedthe Tol Footbridge and werethe first to cross – over.

 

Similar projects will be soon implemented inthe four LLG’s of Telefomin District.
