First Melanesian Fight to Take Place in Fiji

by Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Boxers from Papua New Guinea will be travelling to Fiji to take part in the inaugural Melanesian fight event.

The fight will also feature boxers from the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and it is set to take place in March next year.

The Melanesian fight is an idea that came about during the Pacific Games, when all regional boxing Presidents were in the country.

PNG Boxing President, John Avira, said it is a way to help strengthen ties between Melanesian countries.

Many boxers will be hoping to be selected to represent PNG from this year’s National Boxing Championships.

The championships will see elite boxers from around the country taking part.

“Novice boxers are discouraged to take part in the championships as elite boxers from all over the country will be taking part and so each association is encouraged to send only their top boxers,” said Tournament Director, Dick Larry.

The Melanesian fight is the first of its kind, with the hope of it becoming an annual event.
