Fire Fighters Wants Answers

Port Moresby Fire fighters want to know why four new fire trucks bought bythPNG Fire Service for Gerehu and Beroko, are not being used.

They claimthe trucks, bought for K1.5 million each in 2009, were a waste of money, and are now preventingthem from doingtheir jobs.

They are calling on government authorities to investigate.

The trucks are well equipped and computerized for fire rescue operations; however, are not operative to date.

The firemen saidthe Fire Service Management has been hiring an expatriate from Australia to fixthe trucks.

The four zones Beroko, Town, Waigani and Gerehu have been working aroundthe clock to cover all residents in fire and disaster rescues.

Meanwhile, it was explained that big sum of money has been allocated to purchase new vehicles, pay rents for senior managers and used for frequent overseas travel by senior management.

The firemen said not even skills training or fire drills have been done inthe past 5 years to cope withthe increase of high rise buildings inthe city.

The Fire Service Management has not responded tothese allegations.
