Fiji Secure Four Lawn Bowls Medals in One Day

PORT MORESBY, July 15 – Dominant Fiji won two of the four gold medals on offer in the finals of the lawn bowls competition at Bisini Grounds on Wednesday.

Fiji won the women’s triples and men’s singles, while picking up silver in the women’s pairs and bronze in the men’s fours.

The Fiji women’s triples team of Litia Tikoisuva, Sheral Mar and Elizabeth Moceiwai bowled 20 shots to win the gold medal over Niue, which settled for a silver with 11 shots.

The Cook Islands women’scored 20 shots to beat Papua New Guinea (15 shots) in the bronze medal play off.

In the men’s singles, Fiji’s Semese Naiseruvati beat Norfolk Islands’s Phil Jones in the gold medal match. Semese was trailing Jones until the final momen’s, when he edged out Jones 21-20. PNG’s Anthony Yogyo won bronze in the event.

In the women’s pairs gold medal match, the PNG women – Cesley Simbinali and Ju Carlo – took the title with an 18-13 win against Fiji.

Simbinali, 22, is the youngest member of the PNG team in a sport dominated by more senior athletes.

“I am very excited to be the youngest person in the competition,” said Simbinali.

Inspired by her parents, who also play lawn bowls, she took up the sport at an early age and has been playing for 10 years.

Linda Vavia and Teokotai Jim (COK) bowled 27 shots against Niue (9 shots) to win the bronze in the women’s pairs bronze medal match.

Cook Islands also took gold in the men’s fours, beating PNG in the final by 18 shots to 10.

In the bronze medal match, Fiji ran over Norfolk Islands 28-5.
