Ex Drug Deallers: We Want Alternatives for Money

Former drug users and sellers in Henganofi, inthe Eastern Highlands saythey wantthe government to create opportunities to helpthem sustaintheir lives afterthey stop selling Marijuana.

 

Eastern Highlands Province is renowned for growing and moving large amounts of marijuana to sell onthe streets of Lae City and Port Moresby.

Men who have stopped selling cannabis saythey are looking for alternative ways to make money.

 

Andy Kete is a former drug dealer says he grew and sells large amounts of marijuana inthe Niugini Islands and Port Moresby.

 

“It helps me provide for my family. The government tells us to stop but it is not doing a lot to help us,” he said.

 

Eastern Highlands Governor, Julie Soso says she will addressthe Drug issue through programs that will be implemented bythe ward councillors.

 

While,the government’still plans to make programs, Ltheran church is already withinthe impact area with pilot problems to combat Drug problems.

 

Youths Development Coordinator, Rueben Mete saysthe church is looking forward to working withthe government to combat drug related problems like HIV and domestic violence including sexual violence.
