Eruption Update: Rabaul Port Closed

The port of Rabaul has been closed to all ships, starting this morning following the eruption of Mt Tavurvur.

Port facility operator, PNG Ports Corporation Limited, closed down all operations at its’ Rabaul port as a precautionary measure to protect its staff, other port users and ships using the port facilities, following the eruption of Mt Tavurvur.

Mt Tavurvur erupted in the early hours of today and volcanic activity is continuing.

“The closure of the port is only temporary and we made this decision to protect our staff, other port users, and the ships that use the wharf,” PNG Ports Chief Executive Officer Stanley Alphonse announced.

The port of Rabaul is located close to the volcano and is exposed to volcanic dust and smoke and potentially airborne stones and rocks.

“We will reopen the port for business again, when the volcanic activity subsides. We will advise the public, our clients and customers that for the time being, the port is closed for business,” Mr Alphonse said.
