EPG Report: PNG taking the lead

The Melanesian Spearhead Group or MSG sees itself as a serious player in regional and global affairs inthe next 25 years.

This is one ofthe strategies identiflied bythe MSG Eminent Persons Group or EPG, led by Chairman Kaliopate Tavola.

According to Mr. TavolaPNG is takingthe lead in implementing this strategy.

Forthe MSG to be a serious player in regional and global affairs,the five member sub-regional group will have to reach out to co-operate and integrate with ther pacific island countries and territories.

It will need to share its wealth and resources inthe interest of regional unity.

According tothe EPG reportothis is a new development paradigm shift inthe pacific.

The report sain PNG is essentially extending overseas development assistance on a south-south basis, and to this endthe EPG has heard thaPNG will formalize a development assistance program soon.

Two programs established bythe MSG that can extendthe benefits ofthe MSG resources arethe Skills Moverment Scheme, andthe Humanitarian andthe Emergency Response Framework.

The Tavola lead Eminent Persons Group urgedthe MSG countries not to sit back but to double and tripletheir efforts in gettingtheir backyards sorted and energetically approach and negotiatethese strategic alliances.
