Enga Commercially Producing World-class Strawberries for Domestic Market

By Lillian Sopera Keneqa – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Enga is now commercially producing strawberries for the domestic market from the Agro Industrial Centre facility in Sirunki.

Innovative Agro Industry has been working in partnership with the Enga Provincial Government to deliver locally-farmed vegetables to local consumers since April last year.

The establishment of the Agro Industrial Centre facility in Sirunki has brought about great interest from local communities in both farming their own land as outgrowers and working on the farm.

Through a partnership between Innovative Agro Industry and the Enga Provincial Government, the province is now producing world-class strawberries which are sold commercially in domestic markets.

The strawberries are grown on the farm mostly by women from the Sirunki community.

Enga Deputy Provincial Administrator, Sandis Tsaka says the community has achieved something amazing. He said that it is no small achievement to grow high-quality strawberries in that area which are a great size, shape, have a great aroma, and taste fantastic!

This project engages local communities and required an investment of 23 million kina after a two-year feasibility study.

Through the partnership, strawberries, potatoes, and onions have created opportunities for the people of Enga to stay in their communities and earn an income doing something they have done their entire lives.

Their strawberries are already being sold in Port Moresby to restaurants, hotels and selected supermarkets, namely Stop N Shop, Foodworld at Waterfront and RH Hypermart. The farm will also be supplying strawberries to APEC.
