East New Britain Celebrates Independence

By Edwin Fidelis – EM TV News, Kokopo

Independence celebrations in Kokopo, East New Britain, continue today as the town enjoys the nation’s 40th year of independence.

Yesterday, a convoy of more than 200 vehicles travelled around the town centre to announce the start of celebrations that will continue over the next three days.

Tuesday’s overcast gave way to a perfect Wednesday. The pre-independence celebrations that began on Tuesday in East New Britain were disrupted by heavy downpour. But yesterday was different.

Independence celebrations in Papua New Guinea are colourful events. In Kokopo yesterday, it was an extravagant display.

All 22 provinces were represented, each carrying their provincial flags to identify themselves.

Over the years, successive PNG governments have come under vast public criticism over the state of development in the country.

However, September 16 every year is a day that brushes aside all criticism, and brings together a multitude of people to celebrate our liberty.
