An integrated community development co-operative society in Nondugal in the Jiwaka Province is developing its poultry business.
Domil Integrated Society Chairman, John Waim, says the group has been supplying chicken to Mt. Hagen, Wabag and Goroka.
“We have been supplying chicken to a distributor before tsupplying to stores indivudually, but tproduction wasn’t big enough for the amount of orders,” said Waim.
The processing area is being improved with freezers that have enough space to increase poultry production.
With funding of K300,000 from the North Wahgi District Authority, another K300,000 funding from the provincial government and UNSF funding of K500,000, this has enabled the project to get off the ground.
What used to be a humble operation, done manually to supply the big markets in Mt. Hagen, Goroka and Wabag, is now expanding thanks to government’support and donors.
The facility has two freezers, a sealer and a deep freezer, all tasked to carry out the preservation of the chickens.
The chickens will be fed by stock feed produced from local cassava which is processed in a separate location.
There will be around 80 people from the community working at the site.
Proper sanitation for workers, sewage and drainage have been built to ensure that the facility meets the national agriculture quarantine and inspection authority requiremen’s.
