Djokovic Rules Supreme at the 2016 Australian Open

By Dion Kombeng – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

Novak Djokovic ruled supreme at the 2016 Australian Open when he defeated Andy Murray last night.

The defending champion was at his ruthless best under the lights at Rod Laver Arena, beating Murray in the baseline duels and closing out the match in two hours and 53 minutes.

He started off the contest brilliantly, winning the first set 6-1, showing no mercy to Andy Murray.

Djokovic has owned the year’s first grand slam for five of the past six years, having won his first in 2008, and he got down on his knees to kiss the blue court surface.

Djokovic was watched by Rod Laver, who won all four grand slam events in 1962 and 1969 and after whom the stadium is named, and received the trophy from Ken Rosewall, eighteen times Major champion.

Djokovic is now Australian Open champion for the sixth time, equalling Roy Emerson’s record.
